There’s so much to say about this topic. A few years ago I started painting en plein aire which means creating (and sometimes finishing) original artwork outside. It’s a glorious part of my art practice that I treasure. That and sketch booking! I just showed one of my favorite sketchbooks to a dear friend today and shared how my brave leap to focus on a subject (portraits at that time) that scared me. They winded up becoming a big part of my inspiration for an artist exhibition i put on in 2023- and portraits peeked through in my work again when I completed my women in chairs series. Many of these have sold already, but I’m revisiting some of these shapes now. My plein aire pieces are like my breadcrumbs I leave for myself. I can put myself back in that place when I look at it- and for that reason alone I feel something very deep when I look at this work.
